Artist statement
MAR is the artist name of Maximilian Rupp, full name Maximilian Alexander Rupp, a painter based in Munich working in acrylic on canvas.
I am Maximilian Alexander Rupp. MAR is the name I sign my work with. I paint in acrylic on canvas, either at home in Munich or in the showroom of my fashion brand HACOY, often late, usually without a plan for where a piece will end.
Painting began as something private. A way to sit with my own thoughts and put down what I could not yet say out loud. Over time the private thing turned outward. People saw the work, felt something in it, and wanted to live with it. That still surprises me, and it is the part I care about most.
My subjects are the things I actually think about. Mental health. The cost of comparison. The pull of conscious living against a culture that rewards noise. I am not trying to decorate a wall. I am trying to be honest on a surface that does not let you hide.
I do not work in series. I paint at random, whatever feels alive that day, and I let the work stay a little rough. The hesitation, the painted over lines, the second thoughts, all of it stays visible. That is the point. A painting is a record of a real moment, not a clean idea about one.
